Direct Hydrogenolysis of Cellulose to Methane Utilizing Rare‐Earth Promoted Nickel Catalysts
نویسندگان
چکیده
Cellulose is one of the main components plant matter, which makes it a viable target for biomass conversion to fuels. The direct cellulose methane utilizing nickel-based catalysts often has challenges associated with it. Carbon agglomeration creating nickel-carbon nanoparticles deactivating catalytic hydrogenation been well reported. Utilizing rare-earth metals as promoters increases methane, albeit deactivation catalyst in form nickel-rare-earth-carbon nanoparticles. Adding an additional zinc metal promoter eliminates carbon and allows increased yields. Herein, we report 81 % yield from 48 hours Ni/Zn/Y/Al2O3 at 225 °C under 50 bar H2 pressure.

Rare Earth-Promoted Nickel Oxide Nanoparticles as Catalysts for N2O Direct Decomposition
For this paper, a series of rare earth (Gd, La, Sm) promoted NiO catalysts were prepared by using the microwave-assisted precipitation method and tested for N2O direct decomposition. The obtained solids have been characterized by using various techniques. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results revealed that the incorporation of RE oxides into NiO significantly decreases its crystallite size. Field-emi...
متن کاملPotassium/calcium/nickel oxide catalysts for oxidative coupling of methane
A series of potassium/calcium/nickel oxides were tested for the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) at 843-943 K and water addition to the feed at O-65 mol-%. The K/Ni ratios varied from 0.0-0.6 and Ca/Ni from 0.0-11; catalysts with no nickel were also tested. At least 10% water in the feed and temperatures lower than ca. 940 K were necessary to keep nickel-containing catalysts from converting ...
متن کاملAqueous-Phase Hydrogenolysis of Glycerol over Re Promoted Ru Catalysts Encapuslated in Porous Silica Nanoparticles
Activity improvement of Ru-based catalysts is needed for efficient production of valuable chemicals from glycerol hydrogenolysis. In this work, a series of Re promoted Ru catalysts encapuslated in porous silica nanoparticles (denoted as Re-Ru@SiO₂) were prepared by coating silica onto the surface of chemically reduced Ru-polyvinylpyrrolidone colloids, and were used to catalyze the conversion of...
متن کاملSelective, nickel-catalyzed hydrogenolysis of aryl ethers.
Selective hydrogenolysis of the aromatic carbon-oxygen (C-O) bonds in aryl ethers is an unsolved synthetic problem important for the generation of fuels and chemical feedstocks from biomass and for the liquefaction of coal. Currently, the hydrogenolysis of aromatic C-O bonds requires heterogeneous catalysts that operate at high temperature and pressure and lead to a mixture of products from com...
متن کاملSurface Science Letters Ethane Hydrogenolysis over Single Crystals of Nickel: Direct Detection of Structure Sensitivity *
Single crystal catalysts have been used to investigate ethane hydrogenolysis. The apparatus used in these studies allows for catalyst preparation and surface characterization in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) with an in vacua transfer to a second UHV chamber designed for high pressure kinetic studies. Kinetic measurements on single crystals of nickel show the hydrogenolysis of ethane to be “structure s...
